Self-driving is inevitable
Despite the backlash, companies and countries are investing

When technologies always seem to be 20 years away, just around the corner, it’s super easy to forget about them. Most of us, myself included, miss the progress until “all of a sudden” it’s here.
Case in point, AI before ChatGPT.
Solar Power until — all of a sudden — it’s cheaper than fossil power installs.
Self-driving or autonomous vehicles are similar. Since I first became enamored with them around 2008 post-DARPA challenge, there has been rapid, steady progress, which has only accelerated with LLMs.
If I’m being honest, I turned a little pessimistic earlier this year when I saw people burning AVs in the Bay. That seemed a tad extreme to me.
But despite the backlash, and the unfortunate edge cases, I believe we’re on pace, and it’s time to really consider the implications as we keep tabs on progress.
